EU consumer law compliance: consent field at checkout, withdrawal function, and delayed enrolment
Ingrid
Background
On 19 June 2026, amendments to the EU Consumer Rights Directive came into force across all EU member states. They are already in effect. Three of the new requirements land directly on the checkout and enrolment flow, and I have not found a way to meet them inside Zenler.
This affects every Zenler customer who sells to consumers in the EU, not only a handful of us. Zenler already provides GDPR settings for marketing consent text and cookie notices, so EU-specific configuration is clearly something the platform is willing to support. This is the same category of work.
Request 1: configurable required consent field at checkout
Allow the site owner to add one or more required fields to the checkout form, with these properties:
- unticked or empty by default, never pre-filled
- wording written by the site owner
- the buyer cannot complete payment without answering
- the answer is stored with the order, visible in the order record and exportable
- the answer can be included in the purchase confirmation email
Why it matters: for digital content delivered immediately, EU law removes the buyer's right of withdrawal only if the buyer has given express prior consent to immediate delivery and acknowledged losing that right. Without a recorded, affirmative act at checkout, the seller cannot rely on that exemption and the buyer keeps a 14-day right of withdrawal on content they have already consumed.
If this can already be configured somewhere and I have missed it, please treat this part as a request for documentation rather than a new feature.
Request 2: a withdrawal function
Support has confirmed to me that Zenler currently has no built-in function for handling statutory withdrawal requests, and suggested a custom form as an interim measure. A custom form does not meet the requirement, because the law prescribes how the function must be presented and what it must do.
What is needed is a built-in function, available to the buyer in the same interface where the purchase was made, that:
- is clearly labelled, for example "Withdraw from this contract"
- remains available throughout the withdrawal period
- lets the buyer confirm their name and identify which contract they are withdrawing from
- sends an immediate acknowledgment of receipt in a durable, readable form, such as email
Since 19 June 2026 this is mandatory for online interfaces used to conclude consumer contracts in the EU. A link to an email address or a downloadable form no longer satisfies the requirement.
Request 3: delayed enrolment
Support has confirmed to me that drip scheduling alone cannot hold back other communications and access during a waiting period, and that the welcome email, attached files and community access all reach the student immediately even when every lesson is dripped.
What is needed is an option to delay enrolment, and everything that follows from it, by a configurable number of days after purchase. For longer programmes classified as services rather than digital content, holding back access until the withdrawal period has passed is the cleanest way to comply. At present the only workaround is to take payment outside Zenler and enrol students manually, which means moving the checkout out of the platform.
The practical consequence
EU sellers who need these three things have to build them outside Zenler, which in practice means moving the payment flow to Stripe or a similar provider on their own site and using Zenler only for hosting content. A checkout that moves out rarely moves back in.
Thank you for considering this.
